Do you have a blog yet? If not, why not start one today? The great thing about blogs is you can start one and write about anything you want! Many bloggers use them like personal journals where they write about whatever topic is on their mind depending on what’s happening in their lives. Other bloggers focus on specific topics, things like shopping, celebrities, going green, and self improvement. It’s your blog - your voice - you decide!

The following are 10 reason I collected which tell you why start bloging

1.Sharing information makes the Internet a better place

The Internet is the largest repository of information and electronic media ever created, and one that’s an open playing field. Literally anybody can get a website started and donate what they know to the world.

2.Everyone knows more than they realize about something

I’m convinced that just by living, most people gather enough information about some subject that could easily become a blog. Someone who sits ahead of the television for eight hours a day after work could blog about the shows they enjoy. Sometimes the more obscure subjects make for the most fascinating blogs.

3.Relatively speaking, it doesn’t cost much

In a previous post for the Blog Herald, I pointed out how many things about blogging are free. While some costs will inevitably be incurred for hosting and Internet access, blogging is still a cheap hobby - the largest investment is time. Meanwhile, how much is that new set of golf-clubs?

4.A large part of blogging is just showing up

Because of the low barrier to entry, a large number of blogs sprout on a whim and whither away shortly thereafter. With some determination, discipline, and dedication, you can rise above the stereotypical one post a month average and gain a readership. Just by writing regularly and consistently you already have one up over the rest.

5.Blogging can broaden your mind

We each have closely held opinions and see the world in our own particular way. Most of us don’t regularly have our world views tested because we come into contact with a limited set of people. Putting your thoughts online opens you up to an entire world of opinion. I feel it’s a good thing to be exposed to different points of view - you may even reconsider your own.

6.You already leave comments and reviews on various websites that aren’t yours

If you write more than three comments or reviews a week on someone else’s website, why are you handing your opinions and writing to someone else? By starting a blog, you can retain ownership of your thoughts and words.

7.You can earn money

Most of us will never become “probloggers”, but even small amounts add up over time. Since the cost to get started is pretty low, the road to profitability is definitely shorter.

8.Bloggers are interesting people

There are definitely some amusing personalities out there. A big part of blogging is regularly reading other blogs, through which you get to know a little about the writers behind them. Many I’m proud to rub shoulders with.

9.You’ll learn stuff

Besides the technical web knowledge, you can practice writing great copy, learn how to deal with difficult people, train yourself to focus on the long term, and improve your time management skills. You’re also likely to learn more about the very subjects you considered yourself an expert on, by reading other blogs - or even through comments on your own blog, pointing out mistakes you’ve made!

10.Blogging can be fun

If you like challenges, can think long term, and appreciate the concept of small, daily amounts of effort adding up over time, blogging can be a highly satisfying endeavor.

On 1000000s of blogs springing up on the Internet every year it is becoming increasingly difficult as publishers to make sites stand out from the crowd.

SEs are looking for signals of trust and it is more important than ever to make sure your blog has the signals that Google algorithms are probably searching.

Of course there are exceptions to all the points below but in general if you can steer clear of making these mistakes your blog will stand out from all the millions of spam blogs out there.

1.Use Blogger

Although Google would never accept it the large majority of blogs using the blogspot.com domain are spam. Out of the 100s of blogs I read every day about two of them are hosted on blogspot.com.

Put simply if you don’t use your own domain then your blog is lumped in with all the other spam blogs on blogspot.com and your content has to work much harder to get the recognition it deserves. Google doesn’t penalise blogspot blogs because it owns Blogger but the fact that these blogs get a lot less links than blogs hosted on one’s own domains means they rank lower anyway.

Of course you can use Blogger and have your blog on a seperate domain but then you really should be using Wordpress (or another similar platform).

2.Have a huge blogroll

Blogrolls were popular about 3 years ago and most of the sites that still have a list of 200 sites in their blogroll haven’t had a design update since they launched.

Of course there are exceptions and times when a blogroll is a great idea (such as when you’re an industry leader wanting to make friends with lots of bloggers) but generally if you’ve a small blog with a small readership adding a massive list of links to your sidebar is a great way to make you appear spammy.

3.Fail to provide an “About” page

Blogs that don’t have an about page are quite often spam. If a blogger is too lazy to change their about page to make them excel from the million spam blogs that keep the default text on their about page then it’s quite likely the rest of the blog isn’t a good standard either.

How hard is it for a search engine to use About pages as a signal of trust?

4.Fail to include a prominent “Contact” page

Have you ever seen a well respected blog that didn’t have a way for people to contact the author? It’s quite rare.

Every blog should have a contact page - it makes readers more convinced and in most cases actually helps the author connect with people. If you don’t would like to read the emails then you are able to always delete them.

5.ou don’t have an “Advertise” page

Ok I hold my hands up here - Blogstorm doesn’t have an Advertise page but that’s because we don’t host many adverts and don’t accept any new advertisers.

If a blog is covered in adverts but doesn’t have a page where advertisers can ascertain about rates then it might appear like a made for affiliate marketing blog.

Even if you just create a simple page saying “To advertise on this site email xxxxxx” it’s still a signal of trust that people (and search engines) can use to evaluate your blog.

Whenever I mention my blog people roll their eyes or smile in an “I don’t understand but okay” sort of way. When I mention the fact that I make money blogging, however, I suddenly have their attention.

The concept seems simple enough. I write about topics that I enjoy, people read it, and I make money off the advertising. To those of us who’ve been doing it for a while, it is simple. To the novice blogger who’s just getting into the business, however, it’s important to realize what you’re getting into.

If you’re new to blogging and interested in doing it for profit, here are a few things to keep in mind before committing yourself.

1.Blogging is easy. Blogging for profit is more difficult.

I won’t go as far as to say it’s hard to draw a secondary income from blogging, but it’s definitely harder than most people think. It’s not just about producing content and slapping up some ads. Good writing, proper templating, ad placement, developing an audience… there are a lot of skills required to make a blog profitable, all of which you’ll need to learn.

2.Blog for the long haul or not at all.

A huge majority of blogs fail in the first few months, falling into neglect and disuse. More to the point, few blogs see any profit during the first few months. Unless you can stick with it for at least a year, you’ll probably never see any return for your effort.

3.Pick a niche that you love and stick with it.

General purpose or multi-topic blogs have difficulty developing a readership. Brainstorm the topics that you care about most, then pick one and blog about it exclusively.

4.Start with one blog.

If you have a lot of items on your list of possible topics, don’t give in to the temptation to start a different blog for each one. By dividing your effort between several blogs, you increase the likelihood that all of them will fail. Put all of your effort into one blog to start. Once you get the hang of things, then you might consider branching out with additional blogs.

5.If you’re unsure, test drive.

The fact is that many people don’t have the drive or stamina to blog for profit successfully. If you’re not sure, try a starter blog on a free service such as Blogger or Wordpress.com. Feel it out for a few weeks. If, by the end of this time, you’ve stuck with it and feel like blogging is right for you, go ahead and commit to the effort. This advice applies equally well to test driving new topics if you’re unsure what to write about.

6.Place ads wisely.

Some people recommend not placing ads on a blog until it has matured somewhat. Others recommend putting them up right away. There are advantages and disadvantages to both approaches. Just be sure to place your ads tactfully so as not to overwhelm your readers. Put the user experience in the first place.

7.Enjoy yourself.

This is the real key to successful blogging. If you pick a topic that you love and blog about it with passion for months and years on end, your blog will build a readership, generate income, and generally be a success. If, however, your blog becomes a chore to maintain, it will inevitably fail.

The main point I want to convey is that many people try to blog for profit and fail. If you approach the task with the right expectations and some proper planning, you will succeed.
